Departures Knell Ryan Schmid Hoplin Hoplin Eversole NPR chief to head National Geographic Gary Knell is stepping down as CEO of $184M-revenue National Public Radio to become chief executive of the $455M-revenue National Geographic Society, both organizations announced Aug. 19. Knell joined NPR in December 2011, taking on an organization whose previous CEO, Vivian Schiller, resigned after controversies involving the firing of journalist Juan Williams and critical comments about conservatives by a former NPR fundraising executive.
